Abstract

This issue illustrates some of the most popular approaches to next-generation database management systems, sometimes called object-oriented or extended relational DBMSs. These new DBMSs are designed to widen the applicability of database technology to new kinds of applications. These applications include computer-aided software engineering (CASE), mechanical and electrical computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing(CAM), scientific and medical applications, graphics representation, office automation, knowledge representation for artificial intelligence, and business applications where traditional DBMSs have proven inadequate.
