Abstract

This paper describes a semantic association model (SAM) which explicitly distinguishes a number of semantic associations based on the differences in structural properties, semantic integrity constraints, and operational characteristics of data. The recognition and categorization of these association types would 1) allow a DBMS to respond to more abstract questions, 2) require the DBA to have a clear understanding of the different semantic properties of the database when they define it, 3) allow meaningful queries to be formulated by the users due to their clearer understanding of data properties, and 4) avoid the problem of data semantics being hidden in the application program. The association types are described and illustrated using a DDL and a flexible network representation.
