Abstract

This research hypothesized that distributed data management in a local area network environment is much more like data management in closely coupled multiprocessor systems than in conventional networks. That is, the performance characteristics are such that communications costs do not dominate the design, and in fact may be discounted. Further, a distributed operating system that provides a high degree of network transparency (logically similar to MP systems) permits a distributed database architecture that is dramatically simpler to build than conventional approaches, and performs at least as well as the alternatives.

In this paper we first summarize a simple performance model, validated by experimental results, to support this perspective. Then a case study, the adaptation of single machine Ingres [Held 75] to distributed data management is presented to support the architectural view expressed above. We conclude that the database architecture outlined here is far superior to older, more conventional approaches.
