Abstract

During the past decade, a number of database machine designs have been proposed. Most of these designs have been optimized with respect to retrieval queries,while ignoring the issue of recovery and its impact on performance of the proposed architecture. In this paper, we propose several parallel recovery architectures for multiprocessor database machines, examine the characteristics and performance of each, and evaluate their impact on the performance of the databasemachine. Our results indicate that a recovery architecture based on parallel logging has the best overall performance.
