Abstract

Multidatabase systems integrate pre-existing, distributed, heterogeneous local databases while preserving their autonomy. Within such an environment, it is necessary to develop an efficient and accurate means for detecting semantic homogeneity and similarity among the local information. The Summary Schemas Model (SSM) is an adjunct to multidatabase language systems that allows users to submit imprecise queries without specifying the system access terms or data locations. This paper proposes a new scheme to determine the degree of semantic similarities among terms using word relationships as defined in a thesaurus. The scheme stores semantic information related to the access terms in a matrix and uses this information to calculate degreea of similarities between terms. The proposed semantic identification scheme has been incorporated within the scope of the SSM to better identify accurate semantic matches and improve efficiency. A simulator was developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed scheme and measure its processing costs.
