2000 SIGMOD Contributions Award
Michael Carey

Michael J. Carey received the Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley in 1983. He spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,where he conducted research on DBMS performance, transaction processing, distributed and parallel database systems, extensibility, and object-oriented (O-O) databases. He co-directed the EXODUS and SHORE projects while at Wisconsin. In mid-1995, Carey joined the staff of the IBM Almaden Research Center, where he worked on the Garlic heterogeneous information system project and then on object-relational (O-R) database system technology for DB2. Most recently, in March of 2000, Carey joined Propel Software Corporation (www.propel.com), an internet software infrastructure startup. Carey is leading the development of Propel's new high-performance platform for integrated data, text, and system management.
