Abstract

The IBM Application System/400 uses many advanced query processing techniques within its layered, integrated system architecture. Techniques such as selectivity estimation using indices, dynamic binding of query plans to data, re-optimization of plans at run-time, predicate index creation, subquery transformation to join, optimizer controls, adaptive optimization of I/O buffers, and so on, were motivated by the need to provide a powerful, high performance, and integrated database that was easily used and administered by small and large enterprises alike.
