Abstract

New data processing applications are rarely built from scratch; instead existing data is reused and most likely spread over several autonomous sources. To facilitate development, the reused data should preferably be defined as a single virtual database providing for the logical unification of the underlying data sets. This article provides a global picture of the issues and approaches that have been proposed to tackle the database integration problem.
