Abstract

A critical assessment of the current usage of data dictionaries in typical installations reveals a large gulf between practice and promise. The situation is due both to the nature of the data dictionary packages which are commercially available, and to how they are being put to use. The major problem, however, is the lack of a unifying methodology which ties a data dictionary into the systems life cycle.
