Abstract

When a universal schema interface is put on top of a relational database system, users are freed from specifying access paths on a logical level. Previous work on such interfaces has concentrated on providing strategies for processing queries that refer to an imaginary universal relation. We propose a universal schema interface which is also "universal" in that it permits update and retrieval of the underlying database in a quite homogeneous way. We show how to perform insertions and deletions of tuples that are totally defined on certain portions of the universal schema such that the resulting database always has a representative instance, which can then be used for computing connections between attributes.
