Abstract

An analytical procedure is described for measuring the usability of hardware and software systems. The procedure measures the complexity of the user-visible aspects of a system and the complexity of system-supported solutions to application problems. The complexity measurements are used to evaluate the relative usability of alternative systems - or alternative designs for the same system - that address the same set of application problems. The procedure is an adjunct of an overall method for doing requirements analysis and system design. The procedure is illustrated with a comparative study of three data models: Flat Table of System R, Network of DBTG, and Binary Relation of NDB.
