Abstract
The logiccal organization of a database should be oriented towards optimizing its understandabillty and usability.
To achieve this, a database structural specification (schema) should be solely based on the meaning of data.
A semantic database model is a description and structuring formalism that allows such user-oriented schemas to be specified.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of one particular semantic database model.
A skeletal description of the cardinal aspects of this model is given.
The use of this model in constructing schemas is then detailed, with the help of an example.
Emphasis is placed on techniques for accommodating multiple perspectives on data within a schema.
