Chair's Message The SIGMOD election that took place in June resulted in the re-election of all three previously elected officers (myself as Chair, Laura Haas as Vice Chair, and Michael Carey as Treasurer). On behalf of Laura and Michael, I would like to express our appreciation for the confidence that you have shown in us to manage the affairs of SIGMOD for one final term. I would like to announce the decisions on the following three issues on which the attendees were polled in the SIGMOD business meeting at SIGMOD/PODS-93 in Washington, D.C. 1. The SIGMOD/PODS conferences dates will remain in late May/early June. The SIGMOD-95/PODS conference will be held in San Jose, California. Pat Selinger of IBM Alamden has agreed to serve as General Chair. Michael Carey has agreed to serve as Program Committee chair. 2. The paper submission deadline for SIGMOD/PODS will be changed to the middle of October, starting with SIGMOD/PODS-95. 3. The expensive but not-so-useful tote bags will no longer be provided by the conference, starting with SIGMOD/PODS-94. During July and August, I will complete the SIGMOD "team", namely the Chair's Advisory Committee, SIGMOD RECORD editorial board, SIGMOD Awards Committee, SIGMOD Services Committee, and SIGMOD Industry/Vendor Committee. The members of the Chair's Advisory Committee currently include Michael Brodie, David DeWitt, Klaus Dittrich, Larry Kerschberg, and Moshe Vardi. I will be inviting two additional members. Ralph Wachter has agreed to serve as an adjunct member of the Committee. Arie Segev has agreed to continue as editor-in-chief of SIGMOD RECORD for two more years. Jose Blakeley, Amit Sheth, and Marianne Winslett will serve as Associate Editors. Peter Scheuermann has agreed to serve on the Awards Committee. Two additional members will be added. I have created a Services Committee to implement a variety of service functions that were suggested to me during my last term, such as employment directory, activities for students, etc. I also plan to have the free SIGMOD membership to third-world university libraries more actively promoted. Marie-Anne Neimat has agreed to head up the Committee. As need arises, additional members will be added. The highest emphasis I will place during my new term will be on bringing the research and commercial/use segments of our community much closer to each will other. I have created a Industry/Vendor Committee to help me find and implement various ways to achieve this objective. Ideas under consideration include connecting the SIGMOD/PODS conference and trade shows (such as DB Expo, Database World, ObjectWorld), monitoring database standards activities (SQL-3, X Open, SQL Access Group), adding paper sessions for industry/vendor authors, etc. David Beech, Rick Cattell, and Jim Gray have agreed to join this Committee. I will be inviting one or two additional members from database vendors and users. I look forward to working with you and the new SIGMOD team for my second and final term. Sincerely, Won Kim Austin, Texas July 1993
