Review

The Aqua system developed a very neat idea: to be able to provide approximate answers to aggregate queries, something of major importance to OLAP applications. The idea is that in the case of large queries which involve large aggregations, one needs not to go over all data in order to compute the answer, but could provide a good approximation by using pre-computed information such as histograms. The Aqua system precomputes "synopses" of the original data, maintains them in the DBMS and uses them to provide fast, approximate answers. The authors have addressed all issues, especially what to maintain and how to compute it/incrementally maintain it, as well as system issues (e.g. Aqua can be run on top of any DBMS). Although I have read all papers by the authors on the subject, I am providing a review for this short paper because (a) it provides all essential ideas, and (b) is a very good "synopsis" of the ideas that have been explored by the authors. I was impressed by the demonstration at the VLDB conference, and I find that it is an area worth to be pursued by new researchers.
