Review

Paper Strengths

The paper does well to systematically describe the integration of data administration with application designs. It also provides a good description of the trends in the development of object-oriented analysis and design, mainly convergence. The author also touches on political issues such as the decreasing power of the database experts due to the increased acceptance of object -oriented models, which shows that he has a grasp of the big picture and its implications. Rosenthal?s inclusion of real-world examples such as the description of the problems associated with the scaling of registries when two companies merge is also enlightening. Also, by showing reasons why the object model is not an answer to everything, he exposes the shortcomings of the model for data administration. This model of providing the strengths and weaknesses of an idea is continued when he describes Multi-Tier systems. Finally, the author not only describes the concepts he introduces, but suggest! s areas that need attention.

Paper Weaknesses

However, the paper assumed a high level of prior knowledge of topics related to data administration, which although may be appropriate for the intended audience, can be a challenge to read for readers unfamiliar with many of the acronyms and concepts. Although the author gives suggestions as to areas of improvement, particularly for large system methodology, he does not give any specific implementation schemes.

Overall Comments

It is interesting to compare the issues brought up with respect to data administration and relate them to the issues that have come up in presentations about XML. Many of the issues are similar, such as the notion of a unified schema across levels of abstraction. Also, the notion of determining a standard to work toward is a powerful one in that people recognize that standardization, whichever form it takes, will result in value creation due to widespread adaptation, increased functionality, and the parallel development of related tools, such as CASE.
