The FoxPro database management system has a long history of Xbase programming and fast data access. The challenge was to add object-oriented capabilities to the language, as Visual Basic and Microsoft C++ have done, while still providing compatibility with Xbase. The goal was to provide the benfits of object-oriented programming to Xbase programmers.
The result is Visual FoxPro 3.0, which retains procedural Xbase programming while adding object-oriebted, event-driven capabilities. Visual FoxPro moves beyond Visual Basic's object-based features to allow user-defined classes and true inheritance, as well as abstraction, subclassing, and polymorphism. FoxPro programmers now have more run-time control and multiple instances of formss, all available from the language or visually through the interface.
