Abstract

Various high-level data models have been proposed in the literature, including the entity/relationship model, the role model, and aggregation and generalization hierarchies. Although each of these mode!s claim to offer some degree of evolvability, the question of what evolvability is and how it can be measured has received little attention to date. This question is the central issue addressed in the present paper. Informally, evolvability can be defined as the ability of a databased system to adapt to change. This study is centered about the three principal databased system components that impact evolvability - data model, integrity constraints, and programs (host and DML). Categories of change are introduced in each component and the intra/inter-component effects are analyzed. An evolvability matrix is developed to present the evolvability characteristics of the entity relationship model. Conclusions are drawn on the ability of the model to support evolvability.
